Our Mission

Increase Access to Care.

Caring about patients is common ground across dentistry, and it is not what sets us apart.

What sets us apart is who we see and what we can do. Oral surgery under IV sedation and general anesthesia, and pediatric dentistry under general anesthesia, in a licensed ambulatory surgery center, for Missouri Medicaid patients who commonly wait six months or longer. That is a capability, not a sentiment, and anyone can check it in one phone call.

We Are Not a Dental Home. The Patient Goes Back to You.

The Problem

The Waiting Line No One Sees

Nobody intends for it to be there. It is simply invisible. Everyone knows it exists, and almost nobody can picture it or count it.

With Private Insurance

A toothache that needs sedation is handled within a week. You call an oral surgeon and it gets done. In private practice, waitlists are shorter.

With Missouri Medicaid

The same toothache waits six months to a year. Same child. Same pain. Different coverage.

Who Is Standing in It

Adults on Missouri Medicaid who need oral surgery under anesthesia.
Patients with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Children who need extensive treatment in a licensed ambulatory surgery center.

We are the first in the region built for the patients on this waitlist, for oral surgery that has to happen under anesthesia.

What We Treat

Two specialties under one roof. Some patients still need a hospital operating room, for example those who cannot self-transfer because of size or who have airway risk. If you are unsure whether a patient is right for us, text or call. We would rather answer the question than have you sit on someone who is waiting.

Pediatric Restorative Under General Anesthesia

Full-mouth rehabilitation for children ages 2 to 12 who cannot be treated in a chair, whether from age, behavior, or the sheer volume of work.

Oral Surgery Under Sedation

Extractions and surgical cases for patients who need to be put to sleep or sedated.

Matthew Wendahl, DMD, MD, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon

Care for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities is in development. If you manage these patients, tell us now so we build the schedule around real demand.

Anesthesia

A Dedicated Anesthesia Team, in a Licensed Operating Room

Continuous monitoring, a full recovery bay, and a hospital transfer agreement with Centerpoint Medical Center. This is the capability that puts a patient safely to sleep, and it is here for Missouri Medicaid patients.

Where We Fit

A Surgical Partner to the Dental Home

Your practice keeps the patient relationship. We add IV sedation, general anesthesia, and a licensed ambulatory surgery center.

A Private Dental Office

Examines the patient, provides routine and restorative care, and refers when treatment needs to happen under anesthesia.

A Community Health Center

Provides preventive and primary care, and serves Missouri Medicaid patients well. When a patient needs surgical sedation or general anesthesia, it refers here.

Independence Surgery Center

Oral surgery and pediatric dentistry under sedation and general anesthesia, in a licensed ambulatory surgery center. Missouri Medicaid accepted, authorization handled, and the patient returned to their dental home.

Health centers find the patients. We do the surgery. Together, we close the gap.

The Practices at the Center

Two practices operate inside the surgery center. Both are led by the doctors who built it.

Independence Oral Surgery

Oral and maxillofacial surgery, led by Dr. Matthew Wendahl.

Independence Pediatric Dentistry

Pediatric dentistry, led by Dr. Aaron Bumann.

Missouri Medicaid, Every Plan

We take Missouri Medicaid. MO HealthNet and all three managed care plans, for patients anywhere in the state. If a family is covered in Missouri, they are covered here.

Three Steps, and It Is Off Your Desk

Your staff does not chase the authorization. We do.

1

Refer the Patient

A radiograph or your exam findings is enough to get started.

2

We Verify and Schedule

We confirm benefits, obtain authorization, and contact the family directly to set the date.

3

We Operate and Send Them Back

You get an operative summary. The patient returns to your practice for ongoing care.

Wait times for dental surgery under anesthesia in this market commonly run six months or longer. Ask us for this week's scheduling window before you tell a family to wait.

Referring From Outside the Metro

We take referrals from across Missouri. The Hilton Garden Inn sits next door to the center, and we hold a partnership rate for families who need to stay the night before a morning surgery.

If your patients are driving two or three hours to reach anesthesia, the drive is not the obstacle. The night before is. We solved that.

Who We Work With

Health centers, public health agencies, payers, a health information exchange, and our anesthesia group, working on the same access problem from different directions. They find the patients. We do the surgery.
